Recent outbreaks of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) around the world have many people concerned about the precautions they can take to prevent illness.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, but it may also be possible to transmit the virus by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it.

WHO

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization recommend that people take the following protective measures against the new coronavirus:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If handwashing facilities aren’t readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects using regular household cleaning spray or wipe
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash
  • Stay home if you are sick
  • Avoid contact with sick people, maintaining social distancing of at least three feet from anyone who is coughing or sneezing

Illnesses of patients with COVID-19 have ranged from mild to severe respiratory illness and death.

Symptoms can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
